Requirements the score does not replace
The Yukon eligibility page requires the applicant to meet all of the following, in addition to scoring 65 points:
- At least a high school diploma, plus any additional credentials the business requires.
- At least three years of entrepreneurial or business-management experience, and at least five years of work experience relevant to the business.
- A net worth of at least $500,000 and at least $300,000 in liquid assets (cash, bonds and cash derivatives), verified by a Yukon accounting firm as legally obtained.
- A plan to invest at least $300,000 in capital investments within the first two years. Investments made before acceptance, houses, partly business-use vehicles and operating or maintenance costs do not count.
- A position in the business at NOC TEER 0 or 1, and the intention to live in Yukon permanently while managing and investing in the business.
- Not a refugee or refugee claimant, never refused immigration to Canada, and no active application to another provincial or territorial nominee program.
- The Yukon business is not yet purchased or started when you apply.
The business itself must be new or the purchase of an existing Yukon business that you manage, not a passive investment. It must be in a strategic sector: information technology, manufacturing, value-added processing, forestry, tourism, energy, mining or mineral development, agriculture, cultural industry, or film and video production. Passive investments, retail, wholesale and distribution, restaurants, financial services, business and personal services, most professional services, real estate, holding companies and gas stations are ineligible sectors.
How the program works
- Check eligibility and scoreConfirm that you and your business meet the requirements and that you score at least 65 points on the grid.
- Submit the applicationSend the complete, signed, original application to Yukon Economic Development in person in Whitehorse or by mail. A representative also completes form IMM 5676.
- Candidate poolQualifying applications enter a candidate pool for six months. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee acceptance.
- Invitation-only stagesOnly candidates in the pool are invited to submit verification documents and have their business plan assessed, and then to an exploratory trip and an in-person interview in Yukon.
- Work permit and permanent residenceIf you are approved after the interview, Yukon supports a two-year federal work permit to start the business. At the end of that period it supports a permanent residence application if you meet the requirements.
Yukon states that it expects to decide within 12 to 14 weeks of a complete application, and longer when volumes are high. Its pages list no program fee. Questions go to the Government of Yukon at 867-667-5131 or 1-800-661-0408, extension 5131.
